Myers I can send you a daily picture if you would like the last one that will kind of highlight is I figure out the balance of class material being covered during the class and then homework which I think is something that teachers are trying to figure out also I'm sure that that's a struggle thank you for participating see each other's thoughts on their struggles your celebration so that we can all kind of know that we're all in this together we're all kind of experiencing the same thing as mr. If you don't know famous trials and thank you everybody for being here I love our freshman parent night it's really our first time to come together as a and get to know each other a little bit better I was always one of our most exciting in-person meetings of the year and we're going to make it as exciting as possible even though we're in this remote environment please know that I'm very proud of all of the work that the stew and the staff are doing off the me the most out of these first two weeks and it says setting a great stage for us to move forward I always like to start our sessions with the reading of the mission statements on you take a read of it students and parents and staff I'd like you to think what role you play as I read this in helping us live out this mission statement even though we are in a remote environment Miller High School is a global family in a neighborhood community educating students in a safe nurturing challenging environment I got a question. Cesare students develop compassion creativity wisdom perseverance and integrity to make a positive impact in Chicago and Beyond we are mad and there's a number of Staff members that are on online right now teachers or staff members of your aunt can you do me a favor can you put your name and what you teach in the chat box and just so everybody can see who is here it just demonstrates parents you made it. You made a wonderful choice in choosing matter for your students and the names that you're about to see just roll through the chat box are just great who's going to be here to help your kids all your years so I'm here and also that we have to assistant principals Miss Julie Lyons who's been on here for a minute and miss Christina steals our other 80 and we are here to support you were super excited that you're here and I'm going to turn it back over to Bastrop alright so we are super excited that they evolved joined us tonight when we only have this meeting last year in the same as this year we just want to make sure that all the parents have a place to make sure that all their questions are answered and that we have a how to tell you why we sing freshman you're so important and especially in this that and kind of what we think would be helpful for to make sure that you do with your child so that we can all kind of support that so we just have to really simple I've got this tonight one is for us to kind of tell you the the tips that we think would make your child a successful Learner in this setting probably more specifically but also throughout High School I go over all the resources that matter for you that you might some of them you're definitely going to need and some of them you probably will put in the back of your head until that one day you need it the first thing that I am going to show you if you can just make sure through the presentation if you have questions during the presentation please place them in the chat box and one of the staff members will be sure to answer it for you and also if you can make sure that the mute that you mute your mic we are recording this so that we can share with other families that could not be present so that helps with the recording of the presentation freshman year I'm a math teacher honors refreshment in a few years ago I went to a meeting and the importance of being successful their freshman year so I just want to show you a couple statistics just to make sure you understand how important it is to give your child a great start this year and how how beneficial that will be not only for high school but after that I think it's more than 15 years of research on the University of Chicago has figured out that kind of the greatest predictor of high school graduation is Grayson a tennis so if you look on the screen kids that misbehave 0 and 4 days haven't 87% chance of graduating in all the way to the right students that have an a GPA have a 98% chance of graduating so I just want you to kind of think about how may games your student miss last year maybe what their GPA was what your goal is for them to kind of give you a sense of my kids got this put them on the right track so just Spurs big thing to throw out there is just the importance of your child to be as successful as possible with their academics their grades and then making sure that they're in class or in school everyday on time ready to go all right II sing that I will show you I'm sorry his GPA and attendance is a great predictor of like high school Success but it's also woke the great predictor of success after that freshman GPA higher your GPA is a great predictor of D colleges that you could get into NBA signed my family came home for dinner the higher that your GPA is it greatly increases your chance of getting into selective College which is awesome and we have lots and lots and lots of students at Mather that get into selective colleges and then lastly not only is high school your grades and your attendance freshman year a predictor of high school Success but also of making it through college so students or hire their freshman year on have a 83% chance of graduating college which I think for a lot of our students that's there when we talked to him freshman year about goals that's what it is all right so in our minds we just want to make sure that we all understand that if we can get our freshmen off to an outstanding start in high school it sets them up for success in high school but it also set them up for Success Beyond net to be successful we want to make sure that they are reaching their potential and are classes you know getting the grades that we know that they are capable of and making sure that they have good at 10 but they're in class everyday on time to the next slide at Star Trek oh I'm sorry this is kind of like a little detail if you talk to Miss Johnson The Freshman counselor might mention fresh contract here which is kind of how all these statistics on came about but to be on track your freshman year you just want to earn 5 credits and we'll talk about credits later but you can earn a possible of 7th and then don't say all more than one semester of a a core course and this you're going to have this as a resource so that's something that you would want to go back and revisit for you what we really want you to know how about the students right now in our eyes teachers eyes to be successful this year we think that kids need an area that is Theirs to work and I know that's tight quarters and homes but no if it's a little chair in a little. Just a place where they can go and be like okay I am in school mode in that area maybe a schedule their schedule print out with X when there's to be in class and remember there's a difference on Friday so tiny be two different schedules also as a parent would be great for you to know that so you know hey wait it's 12:30 my kids supposed to be in class right now kids have we got two kids last year they said staying organized but their assignments was a little tricky so anything you could do to help them make sure that they're their day is organized that any assignments are always kind of writing down in the same spot everybody's got blue black or blue light glasses all makes us able to see and less headaches I have a yoga ball chair I think it's awesome and kind of move around while I teeth take advantage of brakes get the kids up and moving in between classes put down their phones close their laptops go outside refresh are one kid in my class today I asked you to what What do teachers need to do to make you as successful as possible and remote learning and one kid said they want to have like a group walk time I thought that would be a a key to success so I think just getting our our students up and moving around their long days and they're sitting down alot and in the last thing is just to make sure that they are communicating and you communicating with teachers this year it's important not only when you're struggling but also when something is going well so that you can tell teachers hey you know this is going well I keep on doing this so that we know so those are just some of the things that we came up with as teachers that we we think that students need help with when they're at home and we think that that would help them to be successful this year Dennis Johnson hi everyone my name is mrs. Johnson I am the first one Consular I am the person that keeps sending you a lot of emails I have talked to many of you and appreciate all your questions when I am to you I am a resource at to answer questions and can I help you in that you're too I'm the best a possible answer or solution to your kid how many of you have asked if you can be in Google Classroom of course you can you can join the Google can take your kids grades and attendance obviously attendance is a huge concern for many people don't understand what a $10 looks like it's just like you're spinning classes have been miss one class they're absent so you need to make sure your kid is lugging for all of those classes that he or she has other schedule Rachel it could be also kind of like tricky I have kids that went to CPS I still have a senior in high school and it could be a tool to motivate kids or could be into to get into a discussion that will last more than dinner so be a positive about that your kids and ask ask the question were you in class did you login do you need help because that definitely helps any questions or concerns I'm your person to go to obviously I may not have all the answers but I have a great team of people next to I'm their mother or someone else will help me get you that answer and it is important for you guys to reach out when you need it attendance like I mention I will be discussing but it is important to report absences even though you're not physically I said it is virtual and it is important that you report the absences will not be excused also miss I'm determined stretching have done great job with the parent newsletter and he goes out all the time with tons of information appearances will I get to see emails but I don't know what time you have to open the thing sometimes it comes the taxman open it up and they have tons of them animation I know this is new to us a many of us with learning and figure things out but if you have a question let us know so full of information next in darkness Lions next week time is flying so I'm going to go over some key information about communication right now so the map for website is on Mather HS. Org that's a great place to start when you're looking for information trying to find information about teachers what's going on in the school building if there's anything coming up that's a great place for everybody to start the class of 2024 with your students are part of arm has their own Google class page so you can join that as well you can join the Google Classroom page and that's where we send updates on different things that are happening and reminders to students about things that are going on during the week councillors also reach out to students on that page to let them know about different opportunities they can have we are frequently on social media so we have a presence on Mather Facebook Mather Instagram and Mather Twitter and those are also if you want to see often times we post our announcements there or successes and I'm pictures of students even though currently our students are not in the building teachers are submitting different things if their students are doing in classes so we will start profiling those I Miss Johnson talked about the matter memo so that is the parent newsletter pump to you via Aspen we use the email send file with the school and then it does I'm show up as in a link inside the email so you do have to click on the link in order to open up the newsletter Miss Johnson is how to post a link in the chat box right now and this is if you would like to add an email address or if you need to change your phone number or change your address this would be the four if you are not receiving Communications from us on the last communication piece that I wanted out of it is cps.edu is a great place for to get communication about what's going on with Chicago Public Schools they also have on Facebook Instagram and Twitter as well and they are frequent posters there so if there is something that's going on in Chicago Public Schools you can find the announcements there as well I'm lastly there has been some information in or out some request for information about Chromebooks we are currently in the process of destroying getting Chromebooks for the rest of our students and that will hopefully be finished in the next week or so after that we will be setting up a process for people of something went to their Chromebook and they need help with it there is a phone number that we have distributed and we will continue to send it out that students should call if they're having Tackett shoes before they cry the school has set up a centralized phone number on that you can use and that's also where you can call about internet and finding out if you are I'm one of the people that can get free internet access another group that I just want to point out and this meeting happens to be taking tonight right after our meeting but it's a guy CPS has a an organization called faces family and Community engagement in education and they work with our current advisory, which will be having our first meeting at the end the month but they are offering a lot of classes for families around using Google classroom and how to make sure you can support your student home on Lake many of you a lot of Google where new to us and we were not using them to their full capabilities prior to last March but we've been on a pretty quick learning curve and so I'm CPS get caught up as well so that they can support their student at home so this was just one example of a class that they were hosting tonight that they were going to talk about Google classroom in Google meets and what to expect to help your student with that and again this is on the CPS page and it's called the face group or the face organization we will be posting this power to appoint to the r2r matter website and all these links will be active there so you'll be able to link directly into that program mister and thank you so he was talking to talk about the importance of students being successful their freshman year and whether we are in person or we are in remote do you expect our students to be successful and we hold ourselves accountable for making sure that they the support that they need you should know whether we are in person or we are remote we do expect B's or better for all of our student so we're going to do everything that we can on our end doing a lot of hard work and we need to parents on board with us but we want you to know what our remote learning expectations are in the classroom oh we've talked to our teachers we talked to students and parents and this is what we believe that it also do on a regular basis they will be success attendance Max every single day when he joining the Google Classroom meet codes and making sure that they are there on time we know that you can't be successful if you are not in class so attendance counts be an active participant in your class that's so stupid engagement is real important we prefer that the cameras Beyond now we know that there may be a number of reasons why students may choose not to have their camera on but it is very important that students are actively engaged what is that camera is on or the camera is off it should be Act play participating in the conversation if requested the post in the chat Post in the chat unmute yourself and answer that question students should regularly be engaging in the classroom and the teachers will create lessons that required kind of Engagement your student will learn more and be more successful if they are active participants in the class we expect our students to always act with Integrity where they are online with us or they are at home or wherever they are polymers Pizza act with integrity we want them to demonstrate responsibility and respect especially online it what they're posting in the chat or what they're with their communicating or showing on their screens we expect our students to always put their best foot forward students will sometimes struggle. They might have problems understanding an assignment they might have problems connecting to the internet they might have problems with their Chromebook things are going to happen we need students to communicate openly and freely the teacher because the students are not in the classroom with us it's difficult for us to know in the moment if a student is having a challenge you're not understanding so please encourage your students write email to their teacher if they're struggling or if they got doubt of a less of a class. I'm they need to be open with the communication and we encourage you to be open with your communication with the school as well and finally and again this is whether we are in person or in remote learning we expect quality work every single time we talk to our students all the time about being their best selves and always putting their best-ever 4th and making sure that those assignments are turned in on time and number one reason why students are that are under just when the classroom and get these an s or because they do not turn those assignments in or they're constantly turning them in late so please make sure that you're working with your students I'm being the class on time participating while they're there being a responsible young person communicate really with the teachers and making sure they're doing their best work every single day to do these things your child will be successful I'm so yes it is very very important We are continuing with that communication and always on discussing situations like that on one of the attendance issues that I was asked to address today was that if your child but thank he or she takes a nap and the teacher will ask for some type of activity and if the student didn't respond and then the teacher will detect the points from a ride because it was not actively participating participating in class so important thing people are asking a great deal, we're going to get a piece past or a letter grade would do better than then we can't didn't expect it I'm the truth is subsistence just like people were in the building we are your grades are 100% so I'm this is how high school is very different Elementary School parent so it is important that you understand this number one we do the quarter report cards just like Elementary School the difference is that beat earn by semester so sample quarter 142cm final grade for semester one so when November comes and quarter one is over the great that's the route I will have that. order to continue to learn continue to improve have an opportunity to get a higher grade that he or she ended up in November and then at the end of the September which is typically the first week of February then the child will receive a final break that is 8. I'll be over later and then we have a laters fall accumulator spring like in April and May that's when we'll do baseball-softball track lacrosse so that's kind of the schedule for the sports right now if you have something specific throw it in can I can I give you a specific answer palooza and so that is an how do you force to join a club and given the current situation right now we are going to be having clubs who stood virtually but I'm one of the big things that we do it matter is in car you can join a club and ask Nick club that has nothing to do with you we have tons of kids and go Club we're not Greeks so it's really up to you to just join something that interests you and so that will be coming in October and we will be making several announcements about that prior to that cancer kids pick up the materials yes students can come to pick up their materials the only material students can't pick up on their own right now or I'll Chromebooks that you need someone who's 18 or older in order to pick those up is serious how do you treat selective such as music or a computer course that takes place in the spring and February and March you'll have an opportunity to meet with rest Johnson financial help you pick your classes for your sophomore year Abilene we will students to come to school for Sports 2 right now we're hosting cross country and girls swimming and those students come to the building and they do goats screening process to make sure that I'm no one is infected with covid-19 14 days let's see boys swimming coach Ryan answered that how can I record students Joyner tryout for basketball all of that information will be shared with students as the seasons are opening up so this is why it's always good to attend advisory which is on Friday that is when we make a lot of our announcements about things going on at school and I'm paying attention to what's being announced in your Google Classroom because we also post things there and a ban on all of our social media sites we post all of that information as well so I got just paying attention to the calendar and in your advisory ain't in Google classroom and for sports questions it's always great to talk to your PE teacher because your teachers will have that information I can share it with you as well I think we got all of the questions in the chat box eBay there no other meetings to attend today this the only one that matter is hosting I'm vestir I'm not sure what inroads is if you would like to email Miss Johnson or myself we'd be happy to help you thank you Evelyn we like to hear that thank you.
