Mr. De La Torre
Hello, my name is Mr. De La Torre and I one of two assigned School Social Workers at Mather H.S.
School social workers have many roles. A school social workers main role is to provide social emotional learning and support to students who have Individual Education Plans and 504 plans.
School social workers also provide Tier Two support groups to students who qualify for social emotional support. Tier two supports consist of evidence based treatment groups that cover topics such as coping skills, executive functioning, grief and loss, socialization skills, PTSD trauma, mood regulation, and anger management.
School social workers along with school counselors work in conjunction with the schools community partnerships such as Community's in Schools CIS and Asian Human services AHS which are agencies that are able to provide individual behavioral health counseling services during the school day for students who struggle with coping, depression, anxiety, grief, or trauma. .
School social workers are also team members of the the Mather's CARE team which is a school based behavioral health team. Members of the behavioral health team include a member of the school administration, school counselors, school psychologist, school nurse, members of the student advocacy team, and our community partners: BAM, WOW, & Communities in Schools. The school behavioral health team assesses, advocates, and facilitates support for students and their families based on their behavioral health, social emotional, personal, familial,or academic needs.
My Back ground
I received my B.A. in Human Developmental Psychology from De Paul University Chicago and my Masters of Social Work degree A.M. from The School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago with a focus on clinical work and school social work.
Prior to being a school social worker I worked in the field of behavioral health and psychiatry working at several Chicago hospitals in their inpatient, partial hospitalization, and outpatient behavioral health programs. Most of my experience has been working with child-adolescent and adult populations. I also have experience as an individual and family therapist and received my clinical training at Advocate’s IL. Masonic Behavioral Health Services in Chicago.
My professional philosophy is to work with students and their families developing goals for developing satisfying changes in their social-emotional, behavioral, and academic progress.
As a school social worker I focus on helping students understand that they have the right for self-determination, personal agency, and an investment in building and making healthy, independent, and informed decisions when it comes to their academic and personal lives. I strive to help students learn ways to build healthy interpersonal social connections and skills with their peers, teachers, and other school staff in order to build a healthy social emotional and academic development as they grow in to adulthood.
My personal interests include spending time with family and friends, biking, walking, watching historical biographies and documentaries, comedians, sports, and music from the 80’s.
All social emotional support and approaches are based on the value of respecting, advocating, and honoring each student’s right for self-determination with respect to personal individual choices, ethnicity, language, race, sexual identification, politics, culture, religious values, practices, and beliefs.
